Reading OBD-II Codes: A Beginner's Guide
Every OBD-II fault code follows the same format: one letter followed by four numbers, like P0301. Once you know how to read the structure, the code tells you almost exactly where to look.
The first letter tells you the system. P means Powertrain (engine and transmission) — by far the most common. C means Chassis (brakes, steering, suspension). B means Body (airbags, power windows, climate control). U means Network (communication between the vehicle's computer modules).
The first number after the letter tells you if it's a generic code or manufacturer-specific. A 0 means it's a generic, standardized code that means the same thing across all vehicle brands. A 1 means it's specific to your vehicle's manufacturer — these can vary between Mahindra, Tata, and Maruti even for a similar underlying issue.
The second number tells you the subsystem. For Powertrain codes: 1 and 2 relate to fuel and air metering, 3 relates to ignition or misfire, 4 relates to emissions control, 5 relates to vehicle speed and idle control, 6 relates to the onboard computer, 7 and 8 relate to the transmission.
The last two digits are the specific fault index within that subsystem — this is what actually narrows it down to the exact issue.
So P0301 breaks down as: P (Powertrain) + 0 (generic) + 3 (ignition/misfire) + 01 (cylinder 1 specifically) — meaning a misfire detected in cylinder 1.
