Monsoon Vehicle Prep Checklist: 8 Things to Check Before the Rains Hit

Monsoon driving conditions put real stress on parts of your vehicle that barely get used the rest of the year. A short pre-monsoon check catches most of the common failure points before they strand you in the rain.

1. Wiper blades. Rubber degrades in heat, so blades that were fine in winter often streak or skip by the time monsoon arrives. If they're leaving streaks or missing spots, replace them now rather than during the first heavy downpour.

2. Tyre tread depth. Worn tread dramatically increases hydroplaning risk on wet roads. Check tread depth across the tyre, not just the center, since uneven wear is common and can hide a genuinely low spot.

3. Battery and charging system. As covered in our monsoon battery guide, cold and humidity are hard on marginal batteries — and monsoon driving also demands more from your electrical system with wipers, lights, and blowers running more often.

4. Brake performance. Wet roads need more stopping distance even with healthy brakes. Worn pads or a warped rotor become far more dangerous once you factor in reduced wet-road traction.

5. Headlight and taillight function. Monsoon skies mean daytime visibility is often much lower than usual. Confirm every bulb works, and check that lens covers aren't fogged or cracked, letting moisture in.

6. Door and window seals. Check for any gaps or degraded rubber around doors and windows — water ingress during heavy rain can damage upholstery and, worse, reach electrical components under the dash.

7. Underbody rust check, especially for vehicles that regularly drive through waterlogged roads. Standing water carries salts and debris that accelerate corrosion on exposed metal components.

8. AC and defogger function. Fogged-up windows in heavy rain are a genuine visibility hazard — confirm your defogger clears the windshield quickly, not just that the AC blows cold.
