Maruti Gypsy MPFI: Troubleshooting Basics Every Owner Should Know

The Maruti Gypsy's MPFI (Multi-Point Fuel Injection) setup replaced the older carbureted fuel system, bringing better fuel efficiency and easier cold starts — but also a different set of failure points than owners of the older carb version are used to.

Rough idle or stalling at idle. This is one of the most common MPFI complaints, and is frequently traced to a dirty or failing idle air control (IAC) valve, or a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system. Since MPFI relies on precise air-fuel metering, even a small leak throws off idle stability.

Hard starting when the engine is cold. If the Gypsy cranks fine but takes longer than usual to catch, especially in cooler mornings, check the coolant temperature sensor first — the ECU uses its reading to enrich the fuel mixture on cold starts, and a faulty sensor sends the wrong signal.

Hesitation or flat spots under acceleration. A clogged fuel injector, weak fuel pump, or a dirty throttle position sensor are the usual suspects here. Since these symptoms overlap significantly, a proper diagnostic read of live sensor data is far more reliable than guessing based on symptoms alone.

Check engine light with no obvious performance change. Don't ignore this just because the vehicle still drives fine — oxygen sensor and evaporative emissions codes are common on the Gypsy MPFI and often show no noticeable symptom until they've been active for a while.
